Key Club began to collect gifts from teachers and sponsor volunteers for their annual “Adopt-a-Child” by giving gifts to less fortunate children from the Common Ground Network (a non-profit organization funded by local churches and community groups) so these children can have Christmas presents this year.
Key Club started when the school opened in 2007. They have decided to continue their tradition this year with their annual gift giving program and these gifts go toward those who need help getting them.
“We get names, sizes and toy requests from Common Ground Network,” Key Club sponsor Mrs. Shelly Burkett said. “Teachers and sponsors volunteer to ‘adopt’ a child and they are given the info and purchase the gifts.”
The gifts come to Legacy and the Key Club organizes them into into specific family piles. The parents and volunteers then come to Legacy and pick up and load the gifts into their vehicle. Then gifts are delivered to the families.
“The parent(s) know that it is LHS people giving the gifts,” Burkett said, “but the Key Club doesn’t really get any recognition.”
This is the Key Club’s seventh year doing this program.
“Key Club simply organizes the prizes and stays after school to give them to the parents,” Burkett said. “It is great [feeling] to see the parents’ faces as they receive their gifts.”
