The senior class has been in conflict for the past couple of weeks; we’ve been fighting for a song. So far, the two most polarizing candidates are “The Imperial March” by John Williams and “I Was Here” by Lady Antebellum. It would seem that seniors are just as passionately pro one song as they are against the other. “Imperialists” cry that the Antebellum song is cheesy, lame and worst of all, “country.” However, those in favor of “I Was Here” are simply confused and angry that Darth Vader’s theme song could possibly be our class anthem.
What makes this disagreement so interesting to me is that reduces our entire class to cliché- geeks versus normals. Geeks want “Imperial March” because Star Wars is awesome and it would be epic (and more then a little funny) for all the seniors to leave their graduation ceremony with it playing. Normal people don’t get why this is awesome or funny at all. They want “I Was Here” to win because it obviously and plainly speaks to the desires of high school graduates. The lyrics are all about being ambitious and wanting to spread your wings. Geeks think that’s totally cheeseball and pedestrian; in other words, normal.
So who rules Legacy, the freakish geeks or the boring normals? How will be remembered? Will be the class that had the audacity to pick something from the Star Wars soundtrack as our senior song? Or will we pick the vanilla country song? Hey, don’t look at me, I voted for “Don’t Stop Believin’.”
