To See or Not to See

Starting at Legacy High School my junior year was one of the most terrifying things that had ever happened to me. I walked into a huge school containing over 2,200 students and had no clue what to do. While I was looking for my very first class, I slipped in a puddle of water that one of the water fountains left for my embarrassment. A few weeks went on, and I thought I was going to do well in this new school. Then I participated in the course English. Reading has never been my strong point.

My entire life I was convinced that I was blessed with a reading disorder. My parents have sent me to numerous reading courses to enable my reading ability, but the classes never succeeded.

Last November, my mom took me to an eye specialist to see if there was anything that he could tell us. He found that my left eye has never “worked” very well. He almost considered it to be a “lazy eye.” The doctor put two different colored glasses on me and then placed a small flashlight in front of my face. For a few seconds I could see red and green, and then the left color, green, just went away. He told me that my eye will stop focusing on the object that I am trying to focus on after a few seconds. I can sit down, read an entire page, and at the end have no idea what I just read because my eye will not let me comprehend it. I now have 30 minute therapy lessons I must perform six days a week that I do religiously to build up the muscle in my eye. Hopefully by the time that it is my turn to go to college, I will be able to read like a champ.

Having trouble reading has always been embarrassing for me. My friends tell me how easy reading is and how they can finish a 5,394 page book in two hours. Hearing that just makes me feel so much better. Not. I have more confidence now knowing there are ways of improving my sight and soon I will go up to my friends and be able to say that I can finish a 5,394 page book in one hour. This is why I take pictures with my right eye.

Hahaha, I like the last line. 🙂 I think we can both nix the theory that photographers can’t write, too.

:O crazy – who would have known…glad you got it checked out and can get it fixed. Even though literacy is way overrated, it is reassuring to know that soon you too will be able to read a 5,394 page book. Best of luck on fixing that left eye
