Band Names and Origins

Lyrics rush through the mind, and grab on to the brain, forever embedding themselves in the memory of listeners. On command, someone could recite the words to their favorite song with pure accuracy, making friends with fellow listeners of similar music types. When in the subject of music, three things are always thought of by the consumers of the music industry; the song title, the lyrics and the band’s name

AC/DC- One of the members saw AC/DC on the back of a sewing machine and figured that it had something to do with power.

AFI– it stands for “A Fire Inside” which represents the feeling obtained when holding in emotions.

All Time Low–  Got their name from a line in the song “Head On Collision” by New Found Glory.

Atreyu– One of the characters in the movie “The Neverending Story” was named Atreyu.

Avenged Sevenfold– Based on the biblical story of Cain in Abel where in Genesis 4:15 it reads:
“But the Lord said to him, Therefore whoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.”

Beastie Boys– Beastie is an acronym for ‘Boys Entering Anarchistic States Toward Internal Excellence’.

Blue Oyster Cult– A combination of a recipe the band’s manager read in a book and the band’s fascination with the occult.

Breaking Benjamin– After performing a Nirvana cover, at the end of the performance Benjamin Burnley knocked over a borrowed mic, breaking it. The owner of the microphone walked onto the stage and said “I’d like to thank Benjamin for breaking my microphone.”

Cheap Trick– They asked a Ouiji board what they should call their band.

Chumbawumba– It was based on a dream one of the band members had. He couldn’t use the restroom in his dream because the doors said ‘Chumba’ and ‘Wumba’ instead of ‘Men’ and ‘Women.’

Fall Out Boy– Still being an unnamed band by their second show, they asked their audience for some suggestions. One of the members yelled out Fall Out Boy and the name stuck.

Guns N Roses- a  mix of Axl Rose and Tracii Guns’ old band names L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose.

Iron Maiden– Named after a medieval torture device.

The Killers– Brandon Flowers got the name from the New Order video for ‘Crystal in which the drum set in the video had The Killers written on it.

Led Zeppelin– Keith Moon told Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones that the band would go over like a lead balloon or worse, a lead Hindenburg. The band then dropped the ‘a’ from the name to avoid mispronunciation.

Linkin Park– The name was obtained from a park in Santa Monica, California but they changed the spelling from Lincoln to Linkin because the domain name lincolnpark.com was taken.

Lostprophets– They got their name from a bootleg recording of a Duran Duran concert in Italy.

Lynyrd Skynyrd–  The name came from their high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who sent them to the Assistant Principal’s office for having long hair that touched their shirt collar.

Nickelback– The bassist used to work at a Starbucks and spent several days saying “here’s your nickel back” because many of the totals ended up being prices like $2.95 or $4.95.

Nirvana– it means the state of perfect blessedness attained through the annihilation of the self.

The Offspring – While about to record their first cd, they were asked what the name of the band was. They didn’t know yet and while thinking someone yelled out “The Offspring” and the name stuck.

Queen– Freddie Mercury said that he had thought of the name for years and just thought it was a good name.

Queens of the Stone Age– After almost being sued because the name Gamma Ray was already taken by a German band, their manager suggested Queens of the Stone Age, because Kings of the Stone Age made the name sound lopsided.

Rage Against the Machine–  comes from the name of a song that Zach de la Rocha wrote for his former hardcore punk band ‘Inside Out.’

Silverstein– Before preforming their first show, they had been nameless. When asked for a name one member saw a Shel Silverstein book on the floor and suggested the name. All the members shrugged and agreed.

Slipknot- Originally known as ‘Pyg System’ and ‘Meld,’ Slipknot was suggested by drummer Joey Jordison. A slip knot is a knot that tightens when tension is applied, normally used in hanging criminals.

Smash Mouth– It’s football  slang for a game that had a lot of  blocking and tackling.

Sum 41– They started the band 41 days into the summer vacation before being high school seniors.

Three Days Grace– Based on a sense of urgency, if three days was all someone had to change something, could they do it in three days.

Velvet Revolver– Slash had saw a film with Revolve in the name and Scott Weiland suggested Black Velvet Revolver. They compromised on Velvet Revolver.

Weezer– Was a nickname given to Rivers, by his father, when he was a toddler, not because he had asthma.

Bands are formed and created all the time by adults, students, friends, and families, or maybe even just a one person show like soloists or Owl City . Students at Legacy have taken up their liking of music and decided to make bands of their own and their names are unique. Although two could only be found, more may exist.

Awake at Midnight- Ronnie Koch, 11, was awake at midnight while writing songs. He looked over at the clock and noticing it was midnight, just thought it would be a great name for a band.

Synapse-  Jake Jones, 11, and friend Nick Musker have a very strong interest in the human brain and mind, along with sci-fi and things related to space. While bouncing ideas off each other related to their interest, Synapse, stuck as a good name. They are going to use their fascination to write songs and name albums, and have a planned name for an ep to tie everything together.
