Board Games

Chutes and Ladders – Whip out the old up-and-down game and re-enjoy the fun you used to have as a kid. Shout with joy as you climb ladders, yell with anger as you go down slides, and stay calm as you hit neither. Maybe place a few bets to see who can reach the top first, with Dr. Pepper of course. Depending on how unlucky you and your friends happen to be, the game is not all that long.

Risk – A game of global domination, usually taking a long time to play.  Take some time to plan with your friends for when all of you aren’t busy. Pop some popcorn, have plenty of drinks, maybe even rent a few movies. Don’t forget to sleep and have a few breaks during the game, and remember, if you begin to lose just throw the game board and leave.

Sorry – Not the song by “Buckcherry” but nice try. The best thing to do is to see the fits of rage your friends get into when you knock them back into home base. Quickly make your way around the board and get into home base before your evil friends decide to kick you back for messing them up. Change up the rules a bit to whatever suits a fun game like adding events to rolling the same number over and over or getting to roll again on a two or a five.

Monopoly – Friends fight over who gets to be banker, who gets what token, the rules, stealing money, and things tend to get chaotic. Some fun rules for playing is that all paid money goes into the middle and is then collected on free parking, or getting $500 dollars for landing on and not passing GO. Try doubling prices, cutting prices, making bets [not with money], deals, trades, bargains, combos, partnerships, and maybe even natural disasters that destroy houses and hotels. Spice the fun game up to make the already fun game a bit more interesting.

Life – For adults it is restarting life in college, and for kids it is future planning. Add some extra rules to the game and play with some monopoly money. Have consequences for spinning the wheel and it flying off and rewards for other things. Make the game harder to win and easier to lose and have “car accidents” since the token is a car that delays a person several spins. There are too many things to change this game that new rules would need to be made on the spot.

Clue – The most complicated game to play with friends. You have to pick what goes where, fill out that random check list, and wait for your next turn to guess who the murderer is. You can’t just look at the board either, you have to go into each individual room to find out what weapon was there. If you want to get done fast, just listen to the person next to you and write down what they discover. Add a few rules like if you guess wrong, that person loses or add two dice to make the game a tad bit faster.

Mouse Trap – Slowly make your way around the board, collecting cheese and building the trap along the way, or play the fun way by already building the trap and then going straight to the end. Then you try really had to land on the turn crank space while your friend is under the trap. When you finally get to set off the trap, you watch with anticipation as the ball makes its way down the built course, only to mess up and fail. You know the spot I’m talking about too, that part where you have to press the green stick up to make the second ball fall. It is so frustrating, but otherwise you still have fun.

Operation– Pretending to be a surgeon could be all types of fun. Especially when there are no consequences for messing up. The best way to win is to hit your friends arm and make him set off the buzzer. Forget the cards and just play for money, not real money, just some snacks and drinks. Chocolate coins sound like the best substitute. The important thing is, if you’re not first; you’re last.
