With the Premier League now starting back up, many people are having their say at who will be the one to go and win the title this season. With a lot of signings made to various different teams, and new coaches signed with new squads, it looks to be an exciting season for most Premier League teams.
Manchester City
Four years in a row of winning the title, what’s stopping them from a fifth? After an impressive finish to the last season going 28-7-3 in the regular season with a total of 91 points and a goal differential of +62, Manchester City looks to be on the right track to get a 5th title. Going into the new season, manager Pep Guardiola hasn’t kept it calm with his signings. He acquired Savinho from Girona for $30m, and Ilkay Gundogan returning to City from Barcelona on a free transfer. With Savinho added to the wings to give energy and life to the top half of the field, City can work off his exhilarating pace and wonderful skill moves. With Gundogan back in the team now, there is more rotation to the squad’s midfield and he brings a lot of experience with him. With one of the best attacks and defenses in the league, not much seems to be in the way of this resilient team.
Liverpool
With Arne Slot now at the wheel for the Reds, the side has been playing brilliantly in the pre-season and won their first two games of the season confidently. With the new signings of Giorgi Mamardashvili, and a new backup goalkeeper from Valencia who just helped his home country Georgia to the round of 16 of the Euros for the first time in their history. Bought for $30 million, he’s sure to have a great impact. Signing Frederico Chiesa as a great new addition to a speedy attack and adding great finishing to the front line, Liverpool signed him for $12 million from Juventus. This season could look different with the loss of Jurgen Klopp, but for now, with Arne Slot guiding the team, for Liverpool things look bright.
Arsenal
After two years of placing second, just behind Manchester City, the Gunners look to go right back at it for the league title. With many new signings like Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for $45 million, and Raheem Sterling from Chelsea on a one-year loan deal. With Calafiori in the back line, he gives backup options in defense and is very versatile with his speed and decision-making and will be a huge boost for Arsenal. With the addition of Sterling on the wing letting the pressure off Bukayo Saka and letting him get some rest. Especially with Sterling’s pace on the wing, it gives a great replacement to Saka’s speed. Arsenal now has a big challenge of keeping consistency after two long seasons of going at it, but now it could be their time to win it.
Newcastle United
Continuing in a new era of Newcastle, the team looks to push even further than last season, after finishing 7th in the league table. Newcastle plans to go at it for a Champions League qualification spot and potentially the title. With new additions to the team like Lewis Hall, acquired from Chelsea for $30 million, and Odysseus Vlachodimos, acquired from Nottingham Forest for $23.60 million, Newcastle looks to add more stability in the back with Hall giving Newcastle more options in the back line, and Vlachodimos being a great backup option to starting goalkeeper, Nick Pope. Eddie Howe feels pressured by his job, so he feels it’s essential to challenge this team and get them higher up in the league table.
Brighton & Hove Albion F.C.
After a not-so-good finish to the last season, placing 11th in the premier league table, head coach Roberto De Zerbi left the club to join Olympic Marseille. Now it leaves a new air to now head coach, Fabian Hurzeler, coming in from St. Paul. The young coach is ready for a great challenge and wants to get this team thriving. Though the coach is very young at the age of 31, he looks to bring a fresh new style of soccer to the team and also wants to implement that with his signings. Signing Georginio Rutter for $46.70 million from Leeds United, and Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United for $35 million. With Rutter now added to their attack, it brings them a true number 9 up top to provide great finishing. With Minteh, he brings great attacking pace to the wings and will be crucial going into the mid-season when the squad has to rotate their players around to get everyone at top fitness. With a fresh new look for the club, it seems to be a perfect time for the team to challenge for a good European spot and even the title if they push through enough.
