“Mercy,” a Sci-fi thriller film directed by Timur Bekmambetov, was released on Jan. 23. Starring Chris Pratt as LAPD detective Chris Raven and Rebecca Ferguson as Judge Maddox, the movie topped the North American box office by making $11 million in ticket sales. Set in 2029, this movie was estimated to make $22.8 million in Box Office domestically and around $49 million worldwide.
“Mercy” follows the life of Chris Raven, a respected LAPD detective whose life turns upside down when he unexpectedly accused of murdering his wife. With all evidence pointing toward him, Raven must work to prove his innocence while confronting his past and navigating a justice system operated by artificial intelligence, which already sees him as guilty.
The film presents a strong, detailed vision of the future through the MERCY Capitol court system, which is completely run by AI. This system makes decisions based on data and logic rather than emotion. It relies on police records, city documents, surveillance footage, doorbell cameras, phone data and other digital sources that are all connected into the MERCY database. This shows that privacy no longer exists in the future. As Raven fights to prove his innocence, Judge Maddox has the authority to provide him with previously “private” information that could help him uncover the real killer.
Although the movie includes action elements, much of the tension comes from Raven being physically confined to a chair by the MERCY Capital court, which limits traditional action scenes. Instead of relying on physical strength, Raven must use his intelligence and reasoning. As the story develops and Raven’s daughter becomes involved, the stakes rise significantly. This forces Raven to think more strategically as he slowly influences Judge Maddox and challenges the decisions she’s programmed to make and regains control over his fate.
Towards the end of the movie, there’s a shift in focus from AI technology to the importance of human emotion and judgment, questioning whether or not the justice system can operate without emotion. The performances by Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson are intense and focused, helping to keep the audience engaged. I would recommend watching this movie, and I would give “Mercy” a seven out of 10.
