Spend time with nature
Spending time outside provides a great way to help your mental health, especially during periods of stress. A great way to enjoy the outdoors includes going outside for a walk around the park or your neighborhood. Nature helps combat stress, a common response to mental and emotional strain that can result from a traumatic or dangerous experience. A study from the National Library of Medicine shows that exposure to nature can regulate the sympathetic nervous system, the part of your nervous system that triggers the “fight or flight” response.
Do a hobby you enjoy
A hobby refers to an activity done regularly during spare or leisure time for enjoyment. Popular hobbies include writing, reading, playing basketball, softball, baking and gaming. Maintaining a hobby benefits your mental health by reducing stress and blood pressure, while also lowering your heart rate.
Journaling
Many people manage their mental health and emotions through journaling. It’s easy to gain control of your emotions when you write them down. Journaling can help improve your relationships with others and decrease any symptoms of depression. There’s no right way to journal, just write whatever feels right in the moment, be consistent and be honest with yourself.
Learn a New Skill
Learning to cook and bake, garden or even just learning a new language can have a significant impact on your mental health. These new skills build confidence, independence and emotional resilience – the ability to adapt to stressful situations and recover from trauma. This engages the brain in ways that improve mood, cognitive functions and increase life satisfaction. Learning or mastering a new skill activates dopamine release, which contributes to motivation and emotional regulation.
Meditate
Meditation trains your mind to focus and achieve a state of deep relaxation, awareness, clarity and calm by distracting everyday thoughts and being in the present moment. Meditation boosts your mental health by reducing stress, anxiety and depression while also improving focus and increasing self-awareness. Also, it stimulates dopamine and serotonin, chemical messengers in the brain that help you regulate sleep, growth and metabolism. Common ways to meditate for beginners include breathing, mindfulness, focus, walking, progressive muscle relaxation and mantra meditations.
