National Spanish Honor Society (NSHS) began its first chapter at Legacy Thursday, April 25. Upper-level Spanish teacher Sandra Villarreal formed the group and will lead its members next year. Nine students became new members by ceremoniously lighting candles at the induction ceremony held in the library.
Next school year, the group plans to participate in events and activities not only in the school, but also around the community.
“I’m hoping we’ll become active on campus, branch out from Spanish Club and [encourage] involvement with Spanish Club,” Ms. Villarreal said.
A student involved with the charter NSHS club, junior Alejandra Perez, joined for that reason. She hopes to expand her knowledge of the language and build on Spanish class has taught her.
“I wanted to be more involved with the Spanish community,” Perez said. “Growing up I didn’t learn as much Spanish as I wanted to.”
Everyone interested was welcomed to apply to join the group. Inductees’ acceptance was announced in their classes throughout last week, personally by Ms. Villarreal. NSHS applicants were inducted regardless of their level of Spanish speaking ability.
“[I wanted] people interested in Spanish involved, [the group] is not just for Spanish speakers,” Ms. Villarreal said.
