Sophomore Courtney Taylor unloads a shopping cart full of cans into the Student Council store as she counts them to see who will be the winner of this years canned food drive competition.
From Oct. 31 to Nov. 8, students had the chance to drop canned foods off in boxes underneath the presidential candidate that they wanted to win the election. After not receiving many cans, StuCo reformatted the competition. From Nov. 7 to the 18, the canned food drive turned into an advisory competition to see which advisory class could collect the most cans and win a pizza party.
“I don’t think the students cared about the election as much as the competition between classes,” Taylor said. “Doing the canned food drive is a great idea because you are helping others out.”
Students donated a total of 1,628 cans for the canned food drive. The winning advisory, Ms. Heather Wilson’s soccer class, will receive a pizza party for raising 312 cans. Student Council officers picked up cans during third period and counted all of them out to get a final total and announce the winner of the competition.
“I will help out every year,” Taylor said. “I like knowing that I am doing something to help out others in need.”
Ms. Julie Daniel advised the canned food drive and helped the students count and collect cans.
“The canned food drive is important because it helps stock the local food pantry with canned goods for the holiday season and through the early part of next year,” Daniel said. “I think it’s important to support those who are less fortunate.”
The cans will be collected on Dec. 13 and will be donated to Living Word Outreach food pantry.
“I love giving back to the community and seeing our students support those that don’t have as much,” Ms. Daniel said. “I think it’s important to remember, especially because so many [people] have so much.”
