Prom tickets this year will cost $90. In the past the price has ranged from $65 to $125 depending on how much the senior class raised from fundraisers. This year, the senior class only made $2,500 through various fundraisers such as selling chocolate, candles and groceries. At a senior class meeting, the senior class sponsor Ms. Kenna Cavnar announced the prom ticket prices and students booed her.
“Fundraising rules have changed, we can’t fundraise like we used to,” Ms. Cavnar said. “if you raise money it goes in a big pool. Well a lot of people don’t see that is beneficial since everyone doesn’t do it. So why should I work so hard when everyone is going to get the benefit. The greater good concept doesn’t work when it comes to prom tickets.”
This year principal Dr. Shelly Butler asked all of the classes to do a fundraiser as a way to work ahead on making prom tickets more affordable. Out of the class of 425 seniors only 75 participated in fundraising, so Ms. Cavnar recommends underclassmen to fundraise diligently for affordable prom tickets.
“I’ve had some kids that have done every fundraiser but then I have those that choose not to do anything,” Ms. Cavnar said. “If everyone just participated and sold one item, even if it was to themselves or their parents, it’s amazing how much money that can raise.”
