With only three games left on the football schedule, it’s do or die for the Legacy Broncos. In order to have any hopes of qualifying for the post season, the Broncos must win all of their remaining games. Head Coach Chris Melson acknowledges that the task before the team isn’t an easy one but has faith in his coaching staff and his players.
“We have three weeks left and if we win them all we’ll be in the playoffs,” Melson said. “That won’t be easy but our kids believe and I know we can do it.”
The Broncos currently sit at 1-3 in Region 1 District 5 football. They next play their next game against the South Grand Prairie Warriors who are 2-2 in district play. The Warriors are coming off of a loss to the Duncanville Panthers just as Legacy is coming off a loss to the Tigers. The match-up features two teams in desperation for a win to avoid elimination from the playoffs.
“We’re a very competitive team,” Melson said. “We have to play a very good South Grand Prairie team next week and it’s a do or die situation.”
The Broncos visit the Duncanville Panthers a week after, who without a doubt is Legacy’s biggest challenge on the remainder of their schedule sitting with a perfect record of (4-0) in district play, undefeated at home and outscore their opposition 205 to 82. Their starting quarterback, Divan Ealy has 1668 passing yards on the season and has a touchdown to interception ratio of 19 to 2. Although the challenge is intimidating, players and coaches believe if they play mistake free and motivated football, they can get a win and tarnish Duncanville’s perfect record. Cornerback Rashad Davis knows that stopping the Panther offense will be hard, but feels the defense can overcome the odds stacked against them.
“You can’t go into a game intimidated and we’re not intimidated at all,” Davis said. “We’re pretty much evenly matched it’s going to come down to whoever wants it more.”
After the Broncos play their next two games, they come home in their final game to play the Timberview Wolves who sit at (1-3) in district and place second to last in the Region 1 District 5 football standings. The team see’s that Timberview is the easiest task remaining on their schedule. However, the Broncos know not to take the Wolves lightly and to play lights out against the Wolves to eliminate any threats of an upset.
“They’re a weaker team than us but we have to play them as if they’re the best team in the district,” Davis said.
Motivated by aspirations of making it into for the second year in a row, the team plans to play their hardest and win their last three games of the season. They acknowledge that the mistakes they committed that have cost them games earlier need to stop occurring from here on out and they need to give it all they have in order to win.
“We really want to prove everybody wrong who thinks we can’t make it,” Running back Andrew Antia said. “We have the talent we just need to put it all together.”
