Sophomore Bethany Ross receives a pass from fellow teammate junior Meagan Hutson on the wing, and as Hutson cuts to the basket, Ross hits her in stride with a perfect bounce pass to set her up for an easy lay up. This type of play happens quite often on the varsity girls’ basketball team.
With a 5-8 record in district, the girls’ basketball team fights for the fourth and final playoff spot. Ball movement and confidence plays a key role in the team’s final three games.
“I love how competitive we are and how hard we work,” Ross said. “Nobody is really selfish and we share the ball well.”
It’s Hutson’s second year on the varsity team. Already accustomed to the tempo of a varsity game, her experience is an asset for helping the younger players on the varsity team.
“They kind of look up to me because I’ve been on varsity before,” Hutson said. “It’s like they’re my younger sisters.”
The Broncos miss sophomore Channa Parvin, a key player who is out for the season because of a broken finger (on her shooting hand). She played on varsity as a freshman last year starting at point guard and was expected to be a core player on the team this year.
“It’s been very hard for me to watch without playing because I have never been out with a serious injury before,” Parvin said. “Not being able to help the team gets very irritating.”
Other players on the varsity team miss her leadership qualities and ability to run the offense smoothly. Although they miss Parvin, they still look forward to making it as far as they can.
“We have really missed her this year,” Ross said. “She could have really helped us out and been a big part of the team.”
Parvin has high hopes of returning next year, but waits to see how this season will finish out for the Broncos. They finished the regular season with their last home game of the year on Jan. 31.
“Even though its a while away, I’m just anxious to start playing again,” Parvin said. “I miss my teammates and want to have a healthy season.”
