In MISD, most students can recall only learning about black history during Feb. Even then, the “history” in regards to African diaspora is centered around oppression, black men’s achievements in America and all things slavery. Black women have not received the recognition and notoriety they deserve. Here’s a quick lesson on black women who deserve recognition.

Michelle Obama’s existence

The first lady made an appearance on the Grammy’s, alongside with Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett- Smith and Jennifer Lopez. Michelle holds a special power that makes anyone want to give her their social security number just because.

Malia Obama

This past week, Dailymail tried to come for our former President’s daughter. She was with her friends and drinking champagne. The publication pointed out she the fact she was underage – as if anyone cared. They have a history of pointing out her failures and tainted her reputation. People on Twitter defended the first daughter, by saying it’s normal to experiment while in college.

Alicia Key’s performance at the Grammy’s-

Sis played two pianos at the same time. Not one. Two. The singer performed at the Grammy’s and took an interesting approach to the way she hosted the event. She performed a medley alongside with Jennifer Lopez for Diana Ross’s tribute.

Kamala Harris on the Breakfast Club

In her interview with the Breakfast Club, she addressed the alleged rumors about how she opposes the legalization of marijuana. Harris opened up about her experience with the drug and her advocacy towards the medicinal use of it.

Remy ma and Scottie Beam

Thank you to these two black queens for their representation on media and for the way they hold it down on State of the Culture. Too many times women, especially black women, never receive the opportunity to have a platform and speak truthfully without being taken as a joke, or overly aggressive.
