With the start of the school year, many students feel overwhelmed by new classes and teachers. A big portion of their free time this year will be spent studying and reviewing topics from throughout the semester. All of this causes students to stress out and put studying before their own mental and physical health. Attempt to find an escape from this burden and try some of these methods to relax.

Listen to Music

Put your headphones to good use and listen to your favorite song or melody. Music is a good way to reduce stress amongst students because you can listen to it while studying or not. The vast genres of songs can satisfy anyone in a stressful moment of time. According to the University of Nevada, Reno, Native American, Celtic, Indian stringed-instruments, drums and flutes are the most effective genres at relaxing the mind.


Your household pet is always a safe bet when improving mental health. At the University of North Texas, they have 4 therapy dogs (at the time of this posting) to help students cope with the everyday stresses of being a college student. “Spending time with animals can be a great way to boost your mood and decrease anxiety or depression, and our dogs are more than happy to do so with you. They can be brought into individual sessions, seen in workshops, and pet while walking around CTS,” the university said.

Take a Nap

Students are put through a long day at school and when the school day ends, they usually go home to do even more. This [sometimes] lasts into the late hours of the night and even the morning. Because of this, many do not get the optimal amount of sleep to be productive. To catch up on this sleep, when you get home to take a nap (just not for too long).

Read a Book

Take a break from educational texts and dive into a novel for the fun of it.
