With about three months to spare, students question how to spend their summer break; whether that be to enjoy their days off or even strengthen their college applications. Passion projects are a great way for students to further explore their interests while also building practical skills that can be showcased on their resumes and college applications.

Independent Study/Research
Independent research is a project that allows students to delve deeper into their area of interest without the pressures of scoring high marks for their GPA. Popular mostly amongst STEM fields, students can research anything from art history to cancer cells. Although it may be difficult to obtain a research opportunity, students will be able to learn how to solve problems and direct their time toward meaningful work. Additionally, if approved by mentors, students’ research might have a chance of getting published and used for future studies!

Building Social Media Presence
In a world currently run by social media, students can dedicate their time to creating a media page that expresses their passions and interests. By participating in current trends and interacting with several demographic groups, students are able to learn the importance of communication and creativity. Social media presence can range from gaining thousands of followers on an Instagram page to getting sponsored by authentic companies/businesses. Even though social media can be time-consuming, it teaches students the importance of time management that they can take with them to college.

Starting A Small Business
Through marketing and a bit of creativity, students can start their “career” early by starting a small business. Creating a business takes a lot of effort, as one must dedicate a lot of their energy towards planning, executing, and then advertising their project. However, with patience and consistency, having a successful small business can help high school students recognize that they hold more responsibility than they realize, and they do not have to feel restricted in their capabilities as young business owners. Student businesses range from jewelry creations to nail designs; it ultimately allows students to step up their leadership while sharing their passions with others.

Develop a Mobile App
From entertainment to assistance, computer/mobile apps are a crucial part of human everyday life. Students who create and develop their own applications are able to strengthen their electronic and coding skills. Additionally, by working with a developmental team, students can understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration for a singular purpose.
