How to Adult: Grocery Shopping

How+to+Adult%3A+Grocery+Shopping

Every home is different in how they get groceries into their house for meals. However, once you move out, there is no one going shopping for you, so it’s important to learn how to grocery shop before living away from home.

Step One: Choose a note-taking system and make a grocery list.

One way you can make a grocery list is picking about five or six foods you like from each of the MyPlate food groups. If you focus on picking foods from all five food groups not only can you make diverse meals, but you will be able to stay healthy.

Another way you can make your list is by first planning out your meals for the week. Take a piece of paper of any kind and plan out a general idea of what you want for each meal of the week. This way you know exactly what you are getting your groceries for and how much of the ingredients you may need.

Step Two: Find an accessible and affordable grocery store near you.

One of the next biggest questions is where to go once your have your list. Many families have a set preference on their favorite grocery store, but before picking just one you like be sure to compare the prices and benefits from each one to the pick the best for you.

Step Three: Go shopping and be smart.

If you’ve ever gone shopping with your family you know it can be easy to just throw anything good you see into the cart. However, make sure you stick to just your list to keep your grocery trip not too expensive.

Tip: Don’t buy everything ‘on brand’.

It’s okay if it’s not the most trendy or expensive brand, the point is to make your groceries affordable for you.

Tip: Sign up for rewards or coupons.

Many stores have a rewards program or app you can sign up for, this is a great way to find discounted items that you may regularly buy.
