The convenience of emails overshadows traditional letter writing these days. Sending a letter is a great formality that could be useful for you in the future. You never know when you might need to write a letter, whether it’s for a pen pal or sentimentally thanking someone, writing a letter is a great skill to have.
- Date. Write the date in the upper left-hand corner. You can include the address/recipient’s name and your name/the return address under the date or on the front of the envelope.
- Greeting. In a formal letter, the standard salutation is “Dear” followed by the recipient’s title and a comma. Include their official title if they have one. (Dr, Miss, Ms., Mr., etc.)
- Body. Introduce the letter’s purpose in your opening paragraph and then discuss your points in an organized manner. The final paragraph is a good place to thank the recipient for their time and summarize your points.
- Closing. To end a letter you should always sign off. Polite ways to sign off include sincerely, respectfully, best regards, etc.
- Signature. The final part of a letter is your signature. Include your full name and title if relevant
