The final buzzer blaring, student section roaring, Head Football Coach Jeff Hulme celebrates his 150th career win. On Oct. 3, Legacy beat Weatherford with a final score of 52-49. As Coach Hulme reaches this milestone, he reminisces on his coaching journey from previous years.
Before coaching at Legacy, Coach Hulme served as an assistant coach for 11 years before starting his career as a head coach at Clements High School in Fort Bend, Texas.
“Wins like this mean a little more,” Coach Hulme said. “It makes you think about all the wins and different teams you had, it makes you look back on how far you’ve come.”
Joining the Legacy coaching staff in 2021, Coach Hulme aimed to shift the player culture by reinforcing the importance of excellence on and off the field.
“The culture wasn’t great when I got here,” Coach Hulme said. “Players got away with a lot of stuff and the accountability wasn’t really there.”
In 2023, senior Khalil Sanogo transferred from his Alabama high school. The transition posed as a mental and social roadblock as he had to accustom to a new school, team and friends. Sanogo found comfort in his new environment with the help of his coaching staff.
“When I first moved here [Coach Hulme] was a huge help,” Sanogo said. “He was always in my corner when I needed him, and I probably wouldn’t be where I am now without him.”
Beyond developing the team, Coach Hulme values watching his players grow individually, both during and after high school.
“[My favorite part of coaching is] seeing a young man go from a freshman to a senior,” Coach Hulme said, “and just see all the different changes that person goes through and to be successful.”
Throughout the season, Coach Hulme maintains discipline by keeping focus on the positive aspects of the game.
“Even when things don’t go your way, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel,” Coach Hulme said. “You can always get things turned around.”
