A loud gunshot fires into the air and spikes dig into the track as senior Lincoln Wright races to the finish line to win his fourth District Championship of the season.
“Running allows me to push myself and become a better version of myself on and off the track,” Wright said. “It gives me something to work towards outside of everyday life.”
Wright began his running career in second grade when his neighborhood buddy invited him to run summer track together. He began running sprints but quickly shifted to long distance when he realized that was his strength.
“I feel like God is the one allowing me to be in this position,” Wright said. “ He’s given me these legs as a gift and blessed me with speed.”
Senior Elijah Hanlon met Wright in fifth grade and began running with him in sixth. Hanlon continues to see Wright progress on and off the track from intermediate school to senior year.
“When I first met Lincoln, he was kind of quiet, reserved, soft spoken and in a way, he’s the same with track,” Hanlon said. “He’s super consistent, doing whatever it takes to make each run his best. He eats right, sleeps right, wears the right shoes, he is always doing the right thing.”
This year, Wright became the first Legacy runner to complete a quadruple crown, winning Cross Country District Championships, 3200 Meter District Championships, 1600 Meter District Championships and 800 Meter District Championships. Along with this, Wright set the school record for fastest 800m and 1600m runs.
“He’s a great leader, the definition of leading by example,” Hanlon said. “He won’t be the guy yelling at his teammates, but he’s gonna be the guy always setting the right example.”
On April 10, 2026 Wright announced that he will be continuing his academic and athletic career at the University of Houston, where he plans to run the 800m, 1600m and 3200m. The Cougars compete in NCAA Division 1 track and field and hold multiple national titles.
“Back in October, I talked to the Houston coach a little bit, and then he ghosted me for about six months,” Wright said. “Then, out of the blue, the Houston coach slid up from my story on Instagram and asked if I’d committed anywhere yet. Within a week I was down there for a visit and then about two weeks later I committed.”
