Heavy Text Books Could be Thing of the Past

If the Texas senate passes a bill signed this past Saturday by the house, Texas schools would now have available funds to purchase digital textbooks, along with online content, laptops and kindle book readers.

This could effectively eliminate all problems with carrying around multiple textbooks and help push Texas schools into more digital means of reading.

“It would really be a way to access content immediately, rather than have to wait every three to five years for the books to be updated,” Assistant Principal Kim Murphree said.

Mrs. Murphree believes although there would be a learning curve with both students and teachers on how to learn to use the technology, she expects to see a rise in academic achievement because of the immediate access to information, and the elimination of the hassle that comes with having to carry multiple textbooks.

I think it would be a lot better because a lot of freshman that don’t have cars, have to carry all of their books around at once,” senior Katie Donovan said.

Although the technology is expensive, it eliminates the need to store textbooks when not in use and the cataloguing process that accompanies assigning each student a textbook.

“It saves us a little bit of time and saves the kids from breaking their backs carrying around eight books in their backpack and it gets us into the digital world,” Mrs. Murphree said.

I’m pretty glad to hear this… but I see some problems.

On many assignments right now, students already skim the chapters they are supposed to read just to get the answers for their reading guides and what not. With digital textbooks, you’re making that job even easier, with just a simple press of ctrl+f and a keyword.

Also, the price for buying a bunch of laptops heavily outweights the price for buying that same number of books. You still have to pay for the online textbook service, regardless. At the current moment, computers usually become outdated after only being around for 2 years or so. Processors get faster, programs more memory intensive, and then it’s time to get another computer. I’m pretty sure that the technology schools buy would end up outdated before a normal textbook itself would.

Just my 2 cents. Interesting nonetheless.
