LBTV REPORT: video (Matt Vela Reporting)
Offense scores points, but defense wins championships. That was certainly the case Friday night when the Legacy Broncos took on the Mansfield Tigers. It was a long battle of “3 and outs” and turnovers, eventually ending in the varsity’s first season win: 14-7.
Mansfield’s offense stated off running the ball, passing very infrequently. They eventually ran into a fourth and two, which they tried to convert, but were stopped. From there, the Bronco offense took over, moving the ball well with the run and short passes. Legacy’s first two touchdowns were called back on penalties: the first for an illegal procedure, and the second for an illegal man downfield. Backed up to the 15 yard line, Kennedy Jones completed a screen pass to Cameron Davis for the Bronco’s first touchdown, giving them a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
From that point onward it was a defensive battle. Both teams shared unsuccessful offensive drives and turnovers. The Bronco defense came up with third down run stops led by Gerald Richardson and sacks from Robert Green, keeping Mansfield without a score for the first three quarters. Legacy’s offense also struggled in that time and even tried alternating quarterbacks for more success.
The offense would then get it back together when Kennedy Jones scored a 60 yard touchdown on a well executed play-action QB keeper.
The Broncos led 14-0 going into the fourth quarter. That’s when Mansfield began to make a comeback. Tigers’ running back, Damon Bullock aided in running the ball and converting for first downs. His running would lead to the Tiger’s first touchdown, making the score 14-7 and putting the opposition only one possession back from tying the game. The Bronco offense took over after the score the score and tried to put the game away. They had clutch third down conversions with two completions to Bennett and a run from Davis, but in time had to punt it back to the Tigers with 5:06 remaining in the fourth quarter.
From the beginning, the Tigers were plagued with penalties, making it first and 25, deep in their own territory. They were aided on a pass interference call which dug them out of bad field position and gave them a fresh set of downs. They continued to run the ball effectively and were soon in Legacy territory. The Broncos had a controversial fumble recovery blown dead when officials said that it was recovered out of bounds (check LBTV report and decide if it was out-of-bounds), letting the Tigers keep possession. Tiger’s QB, Daniel Green managed to elude a sack from Gerald Richardson and scramble for a first down deep in Legacy territory.
Their drive was abruptly ended when the defense forced another fumble, recovered by Gerald Richardson at the 11 yard line. Kennedy Jones would then take a knee, winding down the rest of the clock and ending the game.
The Bronco squad takes on Arlington Sam Houston in Arlington this Friday for game three of the season.
