MISD Hires New Security Service

Vets Securing America has replaced Smith Security as MISD’s campus patrol. After Smith’s contract expired last year, VSA opted to do the job for less while meeting the district’s criteria.

All policies previously carried out by Smith have remained the same. Legacy’s security officer, Sterling Headen, patrols the campus from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Police Chief, Mike Leyman, plans on staying consistent with the VSA officials at each MISD campus.

“We try to leave the same officers assigned to a school campus for the entire school year,” Leyman said. “Workload, other commitments or circumstances do not always allow for that to happen, but that is our goal at the beginning of each school year.”

Although VSA primarily focuses on staying alert for students leaving campus, they will also oversee the varsity football events. As for the cop lights on the VSA vehicles, they are only used when a fight occurs on school grounds.

“Their [VSA] main function is patrolling the parking lot but they also attend the games,” Officer Moshier said.

Leyman believes the new security works efficiently so far, but thinks he’ll have a better idea of the company in about six months.

“It is too early to tell how the two companies compare,” Leyman said. “VSA is doing a very good job so far, but it is very early in the process.”
