Silly for Silly Bandz; New Fad Takes Hold Across Nation

Seniors Eddie Zavala and Rafael Martinez roam the halls during fourth block as they wait for their ride home. They take a seat at the end of the staircase closest to the cafeteria and begin joking about typical guy topics. Zavala starts to fiddle with the thin silicone bands hugging his wrists. He pulls off a black band formed in the shape of a Spiderman symbol and suddenly argues to Martinez how Spiderman could easily defeat Iron Man.

Zavala is one of the many high school students participating in the latest Silly Bandz trend. He started wearing them at the end of his junior year when he received a blue giraffe from one of his best friends. Unlike some students who have a rainbow of the bands crawling up their arms, Zavala only wears four, each of which with meaning behind them.

“I got some of them [Silly Bandz] from friends, so they have some sentimental value,” he said.

Zavala constantly wears two bands that remind him of his childhood, an orange Tasmanian devil from the classic cartoon show and a logo of his favorite superhero, Spiderman.

“I watched Looney Toons growing up. They’ve always been something special to me,” Zavala said. “They take me back to when I was a youngster.”

Silly Bandz were originally created in 2002 by a Japanese design team to serve as an office product. Robert Croak, known for dispersing the Livestrong bands, encountered the bracelets on a business trip and decided to market them as a fashion accessory for children. By fall of 2009 Silly Bandz had spread like a plague across the Southern U.S., becoming a popular trend among young kids, high school students and even parents.

Despite all the popularity and fuss, social studies teacher, Dondrinea Williams, believes Silly Bandz cause a distraction and should stay on the playgrounds of elementary schools.

“I don’t like them, because they’re juvenile.” Williams said. “Why would you want to do something a third grader is doing?”

According to Williams, several elementary and middle schools have prohibited Silly Bandz due to the disruption they create. Regardless of their harmless and innocent appearance, young children risk health hazards when they wear them for an extended period of time. The bracelets can cause blood clots and restrict blood flow as well as other dangers.

“I don’t like to cut the circulation of blood running through my arms. I honestly feel that having too much is just entirely stupid, because there’s no need for it,” Zavala said. “When you go overboard with them, it just becomes a collection.”

Risky or not, Silly Bandz continue to make their way onto the arms of all age groups. Dozens of companies have started creating off brand versions of Silly Bandz, making them glitter, glow in the dark or tie-dye. Senior Priscilla Vorsino began wearing the bracelets during the summer and now owns a great amount of them.
“I’m a little kid at heart and I think they’re cute,” Vorsino said. “If I see a package I like then I’ll buy them.”

I like this article and the information in it. I also love silly bands. Yes, I have a lot, but I don’t wear them all. There are a select few that I wear for certain reasons, the rest are just sitting on my desk collecting dusk. Silly bands are just a fad right now, and it’s ridiculous that people make such a big deal about them; they’re not that big a deal! They’re just cute bracelets(:

Personally, I think it is ridiculous to ban Silly Bandz from children at school because they’re a “distraction.” Colorful shaped bands aren’t the problem. I believe the teachers and principals took this new Silly Bandz thing too far. They’re just a trend, theres new trends every week. Everyone I know has a silly band. They’ll get old and go away eventually.

I only think that silly bands become a real distraction when u take them off in class and mess with them. I think banning silly bands is stupid as long as they are not be destracting it shouldnt be a problem. what is the point of having rights if you cant even use them. this is just another thing that kids have lost the right to. thats all im saying.

I think its stupid to band them from the school cause there harmless rubber band bracelets and there just something fun for kids to collect I don’t think they are of any harm at all.

Well silly bands were awesome but now they’re lameeeeee! 😀 I guess to some people it’s a hobby, and they collect them. Some fellow people wear more than one at a time to “show them off’.

The background information of where Silly Bandz came from was interesting. I don’t wear Silly Bandz but I like to see the different shapes they are able to come up with.

I used to wear silly bandz all the time and I had no problem with them. I don’t wear them now because I think they are stupid, pointless and childish.

    Jose HernandezNov 29, 2010 at 2:32 pm

I personally have never worn silly bands, not because i don’t like them or even care about them. I think kids and teenagers just wear them because they’re a trend and see everyone wearing them. Now preventing kids from wearing these wrist bands is just ridiculous, let them do what they want and they barley even cause any distraction; teachers are just OVERDRAMATIC!

I like the article. Silly bandz are ment to be fun and people are trying to suck the fun out of it. Its just another thing for people to complain about. Some people make to big a deal over such small things, just leave it alone and it won’t cause any harm.

I think it is ridiculous to ban children from wearing them to school. It takes things too far. Let kids be kids and have fun. Most probably in a few weeks after wearing them the kids will get bored with them and move on to a new item. I think it is highly rare for silly bandz to cause blood clots. I have worn them before and know from a personal expirience that they are lose and do not cling tightly to the wrist.

I personaaly find that commenting about silly bands is a waste of energy there simply something people enjoy wearing and nothing more but some people get much to worked up over a simple thing much like becoming worked up because someone painted there fingernails a certain color.
