Three weeks ago the varsity softball team faced a predicament in qualifying for the post season. The team sat at 5-7 and came off of their fourth consecutive loss against the South Grand Prairie Warriors 5-6. For playoffs to remain possible, the team needed to win out their final two games against Timberview and Duncanville. In addition, the team needed South Grand Prairie and Timberview to lose their final two district games. Although the scenario seemed doubtful at the time, the players never stopped believing in themselves and chances of making the playoffs.
“We told ourselves that we need to pick it up and that we were better than how we were playing,” Junior Daniella Romero said. “We weren’t playing to our potential.”
The Broncos won out their final two games against Duncanville 10-0 and Timberview 2-0. As they’d hoped for, Timberview and South Grand Prairie lost their final two and the Broncos clinched a playoff spot.
“”We were thinking we might not have a chance,” Romero said. “But we worked hard our last two games knowing they were crucial and made it.”
On April 29 the Broncos began their three game series against Irving Nimitz in the first round of the playoffs. The girls defeated Irving in 4-2 in game one, and 8-5 in game two. The playoff sweep gave the team an extra days rest and time to prepare for their next opponent, Lewisville Hebron.
“We were all pumped and ready to go,” Senior Kat Henz said. “People thought we didn’t have a chance but we won.”
On April 30, the team started their next three game series against Lewisville Hebron. In game one, the girls fell short 1-3, but kept confidence in themselves and planned to fix mistakes they made in their first meeting.
“We made a couple of defensive errors and had too many people in scoring positions that we couldn’t hit in,” Romero said. “We need to be more aggressive at the plate.”
