National Honor Society inductions were held along with academic awards on May 13. The awards, presented by Mr. Des Stewart along with teachers from each department of the school, were received by over 80 students for their individual academic achievements. The inductions to National Honor Society occurred directly following the awards because of the small number of members inducted.
“[We want to] promote scholarship, service and leadership,” science teacher Michelle Hurst said of what NHS hopes to accomplish next year.
One award winner, junior Philip Glover, won a total of four awards including one he won this year for AP English 3.
“I feel proud and accomplished,” Glover said. “I know I’ve done well and tried hard at something.”
Freshman Deja Morehead won two awards at the ceremony, one of the awards for Pre-AP Biology and the other for Pre-AP English. Morehead believes the work she put into the classes earned her the prizes.
“I felt great, it was an honor,” Morehead said. “I’ve definitely worked harder this year to win them.”
Awards began at 7 p.m. and were directly followed by the induction of 17 new NHS members, including sophomores and juniors. The event ended around 8 p.m. and was followed by a short cake and punch reception. NHS members volunteered at the event, handing out programs and preparing punch.
