Mansfield ISD, a district known for being on the forefront of technology, once again brings an innovation that makes signing up for schedules faster and more simple. For the 2015-16 school year students may sign up for their courses online.
“I believe that this new process will be more convenient, efficient, and organized and will really help us [the counselors],” Legacy counselor Terrence McDonald said.
Previously, the school gave students course description sheets, giving them the responsibility to choose their courses by marking the names of courses they desired to take on the sheet. Then, their assigned counselors met with them to ensure that their selections would meet one of Legacy’s three graduation plans. However, with recent online registration a new program called Career Cruising has been put in place as a useful tool for selecting classes.
“Students will be more involved in the process, especially if they research what they want to do and their potential colleges,” Mr. McDonald said. “Career Cruising will greatly assist in planning for their future.”
Career Cruising has already been introduced to the freshman students. However, for sophomores and juniors, the program leads to new territory. This online course will initiate students to take a career assessment that will assist them in finding their field of study. With their field of study in mind, students will be given the opportunity to set up basic classes for their remaining years of high school.
“I’ve taken the career assessment test as an eighth grader, a college freshman, and a grown man and have gotten the same results. The test is very accurate,” Mr. McDonald said. “You may go through experiences that will shape you but your personality doesn’t change, you are who you are.”
Talking to the academic advisors for student’s potential colleges brings forth another method to get input on which classes to take for the rest of their high school career. With the academic advisors advice, students may possess an advantage of having the classes their college looks for.
“When talking to your academic advisor and your counselor, you’ll really be able to fully maximize your high school experience,” said Mr. McDonald.
Career Cruising will take place in the computer labs during social studies classes in the upcoming weeks. After students complete this process, they will be able to register for their classes for the upcoming school year. The second part of the process includes meeting with counselors to verify that the courses they are choosing are valid for their graduation plan.
“Before finalizing your class selections, make sure to go over it with your parents and ask your counselor questions,” Mr. McDonald said. “I believe that this way, students will truly benefit for their future.”
