Legacy theater performs the play Antigone at Legacy on March 22, 7 p.m., and will compete for the first time on March 24.
Junior Hannah Morrell plays a chorus member in the play, which is a member of a collective group of people who portray the citizens dealing with the tragedy addressed in the play.
“What’s cool about this show is that it’s not some huge, elaborate thing with giant moving set pieces and special effects,” Morrell said. “It’s very simple. It’s just people on a stage portraying these characters in such a passionate way. It’s something that you can only get with Greek theater, and it’s so, so cool.”
Pre-AP English 2 classes read Antigone and work on projects over the play.
“When reading Antigone last year, I didn’t quite understand it,” Morrell said. “The way the Greeks spoke is something that is extremely hard to understand just by reading. It was meant to be performed. And now that I’m seeing it performed, I have a newfound respect for the story and a deeper understanding of the story line.”
Legacy Theater has never performed a Greek play before.
“This style of theater is a real challenge because of not only the way it’s spoken, but the raw emotion you have to portray,” Morrell said. “I think our directors knew that this play would be a challenge, but they also knew that we were talented enough to pull this off.”
