Adrenaline rushes through sophomore Rebecca Roberts’ veins as winter guard prepares to perform their competition show in front of judges for the third time this season. As team captain she starts to ground herself and focus on showing her emotion.
Winter Guard competed at Wakeland High School in Frisco, Texas on Feb. 27 and placed second with a score of 78.2 out of 100. Winter Guard has been hard at work on their competition show since November and has changed and perfected the show a lot since then.
”Guard is a way I can express myself. Every performance I get an adrenaline rush,” Roberts said. “I love performing and hearing everyone in the stands.”
This year’s winter guard show is titled ‘red lighter’ and is inspired by the song red lighter by somo. The show tells the story of a boy that was left by his girlfriend. The red lighter represents the flame she left in him. When the lighter is lit it sparks all the memories he had with her. Sophomore David Darmon focuses on bringing out the emotion of loss and sorrow.
“The show is about holding on to what you have left, even if that’s almost nothing.” Darmon said.
Winter guard will be competing in Championships on March 19 at Mansfield High School. It will be their fourth competition this season. Roberts thinks that winter guard is something that will give her memories that she can always keep forever. She considers her fellow teammates family.
“I love being able to help people and teach them. Being captain has actually taught me things about myself that I didn’t know,” Roberts said. “You spend so much time with everyone on the team that you become like family and you have a group of people that support you.”
