Silver Elite Show Choir takes one last practice bow in the choir room hoping for a great season.
The Show Choir’s storyline this year, “One Day,” addresses the shootings that happened in downtown Dallas this summer. Opposed to past performance storylines, “One Day” will strictly revolve around a general idea instead of a story.
For junior Azalia Velasquez, the show has a special meaning.
“I think it’s great,” Velasquez said. “I really like the idea of the storyline, it can be a glimpse of hope in all the midst of negativity in the world. The show will leave an unforgettable impact.”
Show Choir Director Mr. Josh Powell first thought of the idea right after the shooting in Dallas. He believes to create a great story, passion levels need to be through the roof.
“I was really shocked when the shooting happened,” Director Powell said. “The state of our country makes me upset and a little disheartened. I’ve always turned to music to deal with these kind of situations. I started finding songs that not only represented the current state of things but also how I wish they could be.”
Show choir practices Tuesdays after school until 4:30 p.m despite of the season starts in February. Junior Mackenzie Sartain believes practicing early will pay off in the long run.
“I feel that if everyone is at practice, we cannot only prepare for competition season in February but also be more connected as a team,” Sartain said. “The months before competition season require a lot of dedication and focus, so as a group, we can all put in as much effort as possible.”
Silver Elite will once again will travel to Keller, Texas for their first competition and finish off their season in Duncan, Oklahoma at the Duncan High School Show Choir Invitational. Junior Mackenzie Mohr hopes the show will impact the audience as much as it impact them.
“My love for show choir has grown drastically throughout the year,” Mohr said. “You get to watch something that you’ve worked on all year come together and change people’s lives. It’s an amazing experience, and I wouldn’t give it up for the world.”
