Pink Fest, an annual event held by Legacy every October, supports those who are fighting breast cancer, the survivors and those who lost their battle. The event, open to the whole community and beyond, will take place on Oct. 22 behind the school.
All money raised at Pink Fest gets donated to Moncrief Cancer Institute in furthering research to hope for a cure. The weeks before the event, Pink Fest shirts are sold to raise money for the institute. Anyone can order a shirt either online or at Legacy during lunch hours. Also, wristbands, concessions and a $20 fee to play powderpuff football at the event add to the total amount given.
Ms. Julie Daniel, advisor for Student Council, and Student Council members have been working on Pink Fest for two months. Ms. Daniel believes Pink Fest maintains as one of the hardest events to plan for it to be such a huge success.
“The hardest thing is planning it in the middle of a lot of other things going on,” Ms. Daniel said. “Like homecoming and beginning of the year events.”
At this year’s Pink Fest event, there will be carnival games, a kickball tournament, powderpuff football, vendors, food trucks, bounce houses and concessions. Last year, Student Council raised about $10,000 to donate to Moncrief. Due to the money raised last year, the institute now had a moving vehicle to offer mammograms for women on the go.
“I think it’s going to be a great year,” Ms. Daniel said. “We have a lot of fun things planned and have gotten several groups at Legacy involved.”
Legacy Student Council designs Pink Fest shirts every year that sell across the district. Last year, almost $7,000 was raised in shirt sales alone.
“This year’s shirts have not sold as well so we have extras,” Ms. Daniel said. “They are still available for purchase during lunches at the Legacy StuCo store.”
Junior Sadie Johnson joined the Pink Fest committee this year and works on Pink Fest every day in the Student Council class. Johnson believes that planning Pink Fest may be challenging but the reward trumps the obstacles.
“It’s really hard to get outside vendors that the community will enjoy with our limited networking capabilities,” Johnson said. “I feel like when it’s all over, the most rewarding outcome of the event will be how Moncrief benefits from our donations.”
Many other organizations have also joined in to help make sure Pink Fest carries out smoothly. Some have their own booths and other clubs are even showing up early to help set up.
“I’m excited to see lots of our clubs representing themselves at their booths this year,” Johnson said. “It will be nice to see some of the faces behind the awesome organizations we have here.”
Pink Fest remains as the biggest event Legacy holds that welcomes anyone who would like to attend. It has attractions that all ages can enjoy and it’s all for a good cause.
