Freshman Makayla Davis died from a gunshot wound Oct. 28 on her family’s property. Fort Worth Police arrested former Legacy student 18-year-old Sebastian Ramirez-Barcenas and charged him with criminal negligent homicide in the death of Davis.
Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office said Ramirez-Barcenas was on the victim’s family’s property when the shooting occurred. A group of people there were cleaning firearms, and Ramirez-Barcenas said in his confession he racked a shotgun that went off and fired the fatal shot. Ramirez-Barcenas fled the scene, but turned himself into the CBS 11 News station Sunday evening. His bond was set at $50,000.
Ramirez-Barcenas last attended Legacy High School in August 2016 but withdrew to return to his home country of Mexico.
Davis attended Jobe Middle School before coming to Legacy this year. Davis has three siblings. Dr. Shelly Butler, principal, wants students to remember Makayla in the best way possible.
“I want students to take their time grieving as they see fit,” Dr. Butler said. “We want to try to remember the positive memories from her brief life. Life is short and we must all lead lives of kindness and respect for our fellow man.”
MISD has made grief counselors available to students. Makayla’s funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 1 at Winscott Road Funeral Home. Her obituary can be found here. The Rider will continue to update this story as new information becomes available.
