Boys’ varsity bowling currently stands in number one district spot after defeating Martin 14-1 on Jan. 25. The Broncos have a 7-2 record and a total of 107 points. The Broncos are pulling in a 133 baker average as well.
Coach Mike Young started coaching all of Legacy’s bowling teams back in the 15-16 season. Coach Young says that watching players learn serves as the best part of coaching for him.
“Getting my thoughts and some tricks into their brains and see it start to click is like winning the lottery to me,” Coach Young said. ”It is an incredible feeling.”
The Broncos have three more matches before moving on to playoffs, starting with the regional match. If the Broncos make it past the regional round, they will travel to San Antonio for the state match. Coach Young said that he is still optimistic about the Broncos’ chances of making it to state.
“The boys have a good chance to get there,” Coach Young said. “Any one of them can shoot a 200 game at any time. I like to take it a bit slower with them as Legacy has never won a district championship. They have a real shot at it this season. I would be foolish to say that we will win everything, as that would be asking for trouble. I am cautiously optimistic about their chances.”
Senior Garret Matthews proves this statement to be true. Matthews currently has a 137 average this season. Matthews said that he quit playing sports when he came to high school, but that bowling has given him that opportunity to play again.
“Bowling has allowed me to compete again, and that’s why I love the sport,” Matthews said. “I feel like our team is just getting better as the season goes on. I think our boys’ varsity has a great chance to go deep into the postseason.”
One thing that has contributed to the unexpected success that the boys’ bowling team has received this season is the increase of players. The overall number has almost doubled since last season, and the program has grown dramatically since its original eight members began competing in the 15-16 season.
“This season we have had 23 bowlers, which has given a full boys team, a full girls team and a co-ed JV team,” Coach Young said. “By far beyond my wildest dream.”
Catch the Broncos at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Alley Cats.
“I have a lot of faith in our guys as they have worked very hard and have had a lot of fun in the process,” Coach Young said.
