Hurricane Harvey struck south Texas full force and areas continue to feel the impact including Aransas Pass ISD. MISD National Honor Societies have partnered to help Aransas Pass recover from Harvey. To raise money, organizations will sell shirts for $15 and host spirit nights to reach $10,000. Mansfield High School junior Elena Bethke helps to organize the fundraiser.
“We wanted to do something as Mansfield ISD to help the areas affected and thought we should help a fellow district,” Bethke said.
APISD consists of five schools and employs 125 teachers. The students of Aransas Pass missed seven weeks of school after the hurricane. Junior Mady Walker represents Legacy on the fundraising committee.
“I think it’s important to get everyone involved because together I think we can band together and make a big impact on this small school district that has been through a hard time,” Walker said. “They were really affected by Hurricane Harvey and they are looking for money to help buy supplies, build buildings and making sure they have everything they need to help their students get a good education.”
All of Mansfield ISD has the opportunity to help the community of Aransas Pass. The fundraiser encourages every school in the district to participate. In addition to T-shirts, spirit nights will be held weekly until the fundraiser deadline on Jan. 31.
“They have been through a tough time and just a $15 t-shirt can make a really big impact,” Walker said. “Just show your support. If one person gets involved then another person will get involved. It’s a chain reaction. If someone were to get involved they could make a big impact.”
To buy the shirt, go here. In order to pick up the shirt at Legacy, choose the option that says, “I have a student at Legacy,” and pick it up at the StuCo store. The link can also be found on social media and the Mansfield ISD website.
