Preview: Fable III

With Lucien eliminated, Knothole Island free of weather problems, and the future clearly seen, Fable II is concluded. All the shops are owned by you, the people of Albion fear or respect you, and Bowerstone is under your complete control. Just when you thought Lionhead Studios couldn’t come up with anything else, they pull together Fable III.

It’s 50 years after the events of Fable II, and Albion is going through what seems like the Industrial Revolution. Hopefully this brings up the idea of new weapons. The blunderbuss, clockwork pistol, and the semi-automatic rifle of Fable II were the  to use but started to get old, as, being the best guns, they were the only ones you ever used. I think variants of automatic weapons should be in Fable III, such as a Gatling gun.

It was also stated that Fable III may become a more open world sandbox. While Fable I and II had you running down path guarded by impassible trees and cliffs, Fable III may allow the free movement of your character across wide open plains. Also more than just Albion is open for your exploration. Two new countries enter the game as you take over the crown of Albion and embark on foreign affairs. The countries are either there for you to make friends or enemies with and crush them under your sheer evil and power. This puts the options of being good or evil on a whole new level, allowing you not only to torture or pamper your own people but the citizens of other countries.

If having the option of making life changing decisions wasn’t enough, you are now pressured more often and by more people to take the good or corrupt path. Your decisions not only affect your appearance in Fable III but now it affects your Kingdom, so you can now see first hand the affects of economic downfall due to your choices. As you heavily tax the people, the economy drops and you see the people get poor and sick. But light taxes and a non-lethal ruler have good effects, such as people steadily getting rich and happy and prosperous making the people of Albion love you instead of hate you.

A cool feature in Fable III is save migration. You can migrate your Fable II saves to Fable III and have the previous save act as your parent. That is a great idea for many reasons. First it lets your Fable II save game either screw you over by making everyone hate you from the beginning or start you off on a good note and have everyone love you. Second, is that you now know who your parent is and can blame them for everything that’s happening.  Fable III is slated for an October release but expect it to move closer to December so Lionhead can work on the game more and perfect it.
