Their cleats dig in the new turf as they round the bases, Legacy baseball welcomes a new season with high hopes. After a deep playoff run last year, the team looks to come back better than ever and win state.
“We are all locked in,” senior Carson Cox said. “We look a lot cleaner on the field and our bats are going to be amazing this year.”
The team lost in the third round of playoffs last year to Prosper High School. The game ended with an out at home plate, crushing the players’ hearts.
“It was definitely a tough one to lose,” Cox said. “I think we could’ve won that game for sure, but I know that this year’s team will be more prepared and make it to the next level.”
Cox announced his commitment to Navarro College on June 14, 2025, along with junior Jake Jenkins, who committed to the University of Arkansas. Both athletes look to use this year to grow as players, preparing them for the collegiate level.
“Obviously, I want the team to win state and for everyone to have a great season,” Jenkins said. “I also want to use this season to grow my skills and learn as a leader on the team.”
The team played in two scrimmages before their first game against Arlington on Feb. 6. During the scrimmages and game, the players worked on fundamentals, refined their hitting and worked as a team to come out with three ties.
“We can all agree that the team goal is to win states,” Jenkins said. “I also have some personal goals. I’m striving to become an All-State player, be one of the best players in Mansfield and ultimately do everything to help the team win.”
While Legacy did make a deep playoff run last year, they are a new team this year. There are many players who are making their debut on varsity this season.
“We went through that last year, so now we have that experience,” Cox said. “We know what it’s like in the playoffs and we have a lot of guys who can step up.”
