New Book-to-Movie Adaptations

Several popular books have been adapted to movies and TV shows.

One Of Us Is Lying
Karen M. McManus made a name for herself through her popular young adult thrillers. By far her most well-known novel, “One of Us Is Lying” released as a TV series on Peacock on Oct. 7, 2021. It lasted two seasons before ending in January. The book involves themes from the Breakfast Club, with the four main characters fitting four different high school stereotypes. After their classmate dies in detention, the book/show follows the students as they try to prove their innocence.

The Last Thing He Told Me
A popular mystery-thriller in 2021 and 2022, “The Last Thing He Told Me” by Laura Dave features a mom rebuilding a relationship with her stepdaughter after her husband mysteriously disappears. Working together, they search for his true identity and why he went missing.  The TV series, starring Jennifer Garner and Angourie Rice, will premiere on April 14 on Apple TV+.

Luckiest Girl Alive
Luckiest Girl Alive” by Jessica Knoll was first published in 2015, but it became a film in 2022, hitting Netflix on Sept. 30. The story follows a girl named Ani, who, despite having a rocky past, is determined to create her perfect life. Disclaimer: The movie is rated R, and those thinking about watching it should check trigger warnings before viewing.

Daisy Jones And The Six
Daisy Jones and the Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid features a young girl entering into the music industry in the early seventies. She writes the story in interview style, as if they were talking to the main character, Daisy Jones, and other important characters. Amazon Prime Video released the teaser for the upcoming TV series, and the first episode aired on March 3, 2023. The show stars Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough as Daisy Jones and Sam Claflin as the other main character, Billy Dunne.

The Summer I Turned Pretty
Jenny Han’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty” series became a TV show on Amazon Prime Video in June 2022. It quickly gained popularity with those who read the series and others who decided to watch. The main character Isabelle spends her summers at a beach house with her brother and a family with two boys. One her best friend, one her lifelong crush. In the first book of the series, her relationship with both brothers changes. Keep in mind, while the TV series includes many similar characters and plotlines, the show includes many points that don’t appear in the book. Season two recently finished filming, but a release date has yet to be announced.
