Good music, smiles and face paint remains one of the best ways to start your day, especially for the FALS field day. The Functional Academic Learning Support, or FALS, classes will host their annual field day Thursday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students will be able to participate in a multitude of different activities and spend time with their friends.
“Something that I’ve learned from past field days is that we definitely need all the helpers we can get,” FALS teacher Jayme Schroeder said. “Field day can be a lot, and having helpers makes the set-up and cleaning process much easier, along with keeping our students company.”
Mr. Leonard Cousins originally created the field day during his time over the FALS program. He wanted to create a day for the FALS kids to have fun towards the end of the school year.
“This year, Mr. Cousins did a lot of the work by organizing all the food for the kids and staff along with getting the fire trucks,” Ms. Schroeder said. “It’s good to see all of the people who come together to make field day a memorable experience for everyone involved.”
Junior Kylee Middleton began working with the FALS students her freshmen year, building close friendships with each and every student. Middleton spends every B-day doing hands-on art projects and spends the time learning about her peers.
“One thing that really urges me to be a part of Partners in Art is the reminder that I have the capability to be there,” Middleton said. “I want to be able to help the kids with whatever they need.”
Field day will have activities such as bounce houses, music areas, face painting, tricycles, volleyball and many other games. Ms. Schroeder wants all of her students to feel included and have every opportunity to enjoy the games with their classmates.
“I am looking forward to getting to watch the partners achieve things they don’t normally do,” Middleton said. “I think the kids are truly such amazing, caring people no matter the circumstance, and I love being able to participate in the field day with them.”
Multiple different clubs and organizations come together to help set up field day including: student council, JROTC, Sunshine Club and the students participating in Partners in Art and Partners in PE.
“I enjoy being able to give the students something to look forward to,” Ms. Shroeder said. “Seeing them enjoying themselves brings me a sense of accomplishment and joy knowing that they are having a good time.”
