NHS, Key Club Promote Food Drive

NHS, Key Club Promote Food Drive

NHS and Key Club are promoting a food drive between Nov. 1 and 9 for the Mansfield food pantry associated with Common Grounds, which services some of Legacy’s students as well as other residents.

Students can donate dry boxed goods, canned goods, and other nonperishable items. Freshmen should take the food to Mrs. McGuinness, sophomores to Mrs. Bennett, juniors to Mrs. Gross or Mr. Bimmerle and seniors to Mrs. Shackelford. Any grade can bring cans by Mrs. Hurst’s room A-U202 or Mrs. Burkett’s room A-Y317.

Junior Katrina Huynh and other NHS members made posters and fliers to spread awareness of the drive. Posters like Huynh’s “Juniors, Get Your Cans Together!” are intended to spark a friendly rivalry between grades.

“It’s supposed to bring out motivation to defeat the other classes,” Huynh said. “That way we’ll get more food in as donations. It’s cool how we can get the whole school involved in a cause.”

To build enthusiasm for the drive, NHS will buy candy for the winning grade level to receive during English classes after the drive ends. Key Club president senior Cynthia Garza, who helped make posters, believed the event’s success also depends on whether or not people know about the drive in the first place.

“People want to support a food drive, but honestly, it all depends,” Garza said. “We’re making posters, which is good progress, because we need to advertise a lot.”

Laura Baker, Staff Writer
My dear fellow homo sapiens, I’m more familiar with textbooks and periodic tables than newspapers, so you’ll have to cut me a little slack if my writing seems a little different. This is my first year on the newspaper staff even though I’m a senior—a result of College Board’s advice to become a “well rounded individual” and my wandering quest to gain as many eclectic (fancy word!) skills as I can during high school. I enjoy reading, listening to a surprising variety of music and having epiphanies and random arguments about words. My friends may warn you to never say the word “sluggish” within my hearing, since it shows an obviously biased and unfair preference in the English language for slugs. No one ever says the word “slothish” or “turtleish”, as in “I’m worried about Laura; her actions are very snailish today.” Sincerely looking forward to an interesting, slug-free year and wishing you a very merry unbirthday, Laura Baker [email protected]
