Students Advance to State in VASE Competition

Students Advance to State in VASE Competition

For the sixth straight year, art students participating in Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE), a competition comparing students’ artwork from all over the state, earned more medals and had more students advance to State than all other Mansfield ISD high schools.

“I like VASE because it provides the student a chance to discuss their artwork. Sometimes it’s good to get an opinion from someone else other than me,” art teacher David Mason said.

Legacy’s art department entered over 100 pieces and earned 97 Superior Rating Gold Medals, breaking not only the high school record for medals, but the district record as well.

“We didn’t have as many pieces go to State as we have in the past, but having that many students that we thought were talented enough speaks loudly of the students here at Legacy,” Mr. Mason said.

At the competition judges compared Legacy students’ artwork against the 11 south region, Saturday Feb. 9 at Timberview High School. Judges interviewed students about their piece, then rated the artwork on a scale of one to four: rating 4- superior, rating 3- excellent, rating 2- average, and rating 1- below average.

“It wasn’t as nerve-wracking or frightening as I was expecting,” sophomore Madison Ohler said. ”When [the judges] agree with me, it means a lot, and it helps with my future pieces because they told me how to fix my problems.”

Of the entries, 11 pieces will advance to state. This year state will be held at Bryan High School near College Station April 5-6.

“I’m nervous, and I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Ohler said. “I don’t know anyone that’s going, so it’s going to be new people I’ve never talked to. I feel like it’s going to be fun.”

Megan Rathbun, LBTV Assistant Producer
Hello there. How are you? Good? Oh, me too. Probably. Anyway, my name is Megan Rathbun, and this is my second year in Newspaper, except this year I have a fancy position— LBTV Assistant Producer. You may have seen me around the school, perhaps even stalking you for “Newspaper reasons”, or, I could be reading this over your shoulder right now. To check this look at the photo above these words. If there is a person behind you who is identical to said photo, it’s me. I feel comfortable writing that and being creepy because no one- no one outside of the Journalism department- reads these bios. Therefore, if you are a non-journalism student, and you have read this, you can find me in the hallway and tell me how creepy that was. Also, purple, triangle, square, fifteen, yellow. So long, and thanks for all the fish. [email protected]
