Legacy Principal Dr. Shelly Butler answered questions through a live chat hosted by TheRiderOnline on Feb. 12. A transcript of the questions as well as her answers are listed below.

Comment From: Why does Legacy have a sucky administration?
why is most of the staff rude and judgmental to students for no reason?

It is my expectation that every student feels welcomed and supported by every staff member at Legacy. It is important for everyone to be treated with respect. If you have a problem with a staff member, it is best to address that staff member individually and resolve the issue.

Why are we not allowed to have a senior skip day? A lot of districts around here do & the admin is pretty ok with it

We want you to be at school everyday.

Comment From: Why does Legacy have a sucky administration?
why are you doing this?

To give everyone a chance to communicate with me on various topics.

How strict is dresscode for prom?

The dress code for prom will be published through English classes soon. The dress code has not changed from previous years. Of course, the administrative team wants students to enjoy the event. We understand that it is a student celebration – a time to have fun. We expect everyone to wear clothing that is appropriate for a high school event.

Why do boys get to wear their shorts but girls can’t wear theirs (Nike shorts)

All shorts-despite the gender of the human inside them- must be no shorter than 5 inches above the top of the knee.

Why did the exemption policy for ap classes change? Now if we are sick for more than two days we have to take an exam which is stupid because we will have just taken an ap exam & most teachers just use old ap exams anyways. It seems pointless

Last year, the number of allowed absences was 2 – just like this year.

Comment From: Legacy Senior
Why do I consistently see Legacy admin such as Dr. Butler and Mr. Cousins eating off-campus food in front of the entire cafeteria when you confiscate any student’s off-campus food?

I – nor my administrators- have ever confiscated food from a student. Students bring food into the cafeteria every day for lunch. Parents can drop off “outside food” for their student anytime they’d like to.

Are we going to switch to block schedule next year?

Mallett: Block schedule is up for discussion at the next school board meeting. We’re working on a story about that. Check back on therideronline.com for more updates.

Comment From: Why
Why do we have to stay in the classrooms during the exams we exempted? we earned the exemption so why do we have to suffer in class doing nothing?

The exemption policy exempts students from an exam. not from school. We elected to have students remain in classrooms this year for better attendance accountability and supervision.

Why are we not allowed to wear hats on dress up days?

Students have a hard time transitioning back to the official “no hat’ dress code policy after dress up days. It is best to not allow hats ever instead of trying to re-teach students that hats are not allowed to be worn in the building.

Comment From: Ruth
Is it possible that we will ever have block scheduling again?

I have learned not to ever say never. Nothing is impossible. Let’s see what discussion come from the school board meeting coming up.

Comment From: Salad for life
Dr. Butler, I believe our school should have a salad bar to offer students healthier lunch options, do you believe this might be possible in the future?

I would love that. Great idea. Stop by to see me so that we can pitch that idea to the student nutrition department.

Comment From: Ruth
How come we can’t bring Starbucks to class but Student Council can sell coffee?

Your beverage needs to be in a reusable cup. The cup is the problem, not the beverage.

Comment From: Ruth
What is the best part of being principal?

Talking to students everyday. Hearing about your plans for the future is exciting. Also, I love teaching and learning. My hope is to lead a school that produces high quality students who can one day take over the world.

Comment From: Ruth
What is the hardest part about being principal?

Realizing that I can’t do everything. I want to attend every event we host. I want to give students and parents everything they need. It’s frustrating when I can’t make everything happen for every body.

Comment From: Lee
What’s the biggest difference in being a Middle School principal vs a high school principal?

The sheer number of people I talk to everyday 🙂 Middle school was a smaller environment where I knew almost every student by name. It is frustrating not to get a chance to talk to every student at some point during the year.

Comment From: Ben
What is the biggest challenge Legacy faces as a school in an ethnically diverse zoning?

I think that’s an asset. The more diverse our school is, the more ideas and talents we have to use. We are better because of our diversity.

What’s so wrong with people wearing leggings?

You can wear leggings as long as the shirt or dress you have on is no shorter than 5 inches above the top of your knee. If you can wear your shirt or dress without leggings and still be in dress code – you are ok.

I also like BMX during my free time and playing video games (Can't wait for the new PS4). I have a pet cat, snake and turtle. I really hope this year will be fun! [email protected]
