“The Best of Both Worlds” plays from the gym speakers as cheerleaders and Silver Spurs teach a dance to children attending the mini clinic. On Sept. 20, Legacy Cheer and the Silver Spurs co-hosted a mini spirit clinic for students in kindergarten through second grade. 88 children pre-registered and about 15 kids walked up which totaled to just under 100 kids.
“When the officers choreographed our dance, they put in a kick for drill and a toe touch for cheer,” Head Drill Team Director Alexandria Thomas said, “ Taking elements of a cheerleader and elements of drill team helped connect everyone.”
Throughout the clinic, the attendees learned from both Silver Spurs and cheerleaders, split up by their grade level. The group leaders chose what schedule to run their class on, and at the end of the day, they all came together to show off what they learned. The behind-the-scenes of the mini clinic takes lots of collaboration and planning from cheer, drill team and their boosters.
“We’re lucky to have parents that support us, and that drop everything to help,” Coach Thomas said. “We also have great kids that listen to directions and get things done.”
At the Sept. 26 varsity football game, the mini clinic participants received the opportunity to perform with the Silver Spurs and cheerleaders. They performed their clinic routine to “The Best of Both Worlds” by Hannah Montana and cheered with the cheerleaders.
“Walking on the field and getting all the girls ready to perform made me feel proud of them,” senior Kennedy Milam said. “It made me ecstatic for the future of Legacy Cheer.”
Two attendees also got the opportunity to be a Silver Spur for the whole first half of the game as a raffle prize from Mini Clinic. For some of the high schoolers, Mini Clinic brings back memories from when they attended as elementary students. Junior Avery Ross attended mini clinic as a kid, and worked it as a Silver Spur this year.
“Getting to be a helping hand during the week of the mini clinic game was so much fun,” Ross said. “Going from being a little girl learning various things from the spurs, to being a spur who teaches what she loves most was very full circle.”
The Silver Spurs will host another mini clinic in April that will correlate with their spring show. Children who attend this mini clinic will dance in the spring show on April 23 to show off the skills they learn from the Silver Spurs.
“Every once in a while, you get a spur who will be like ‘you know what’s funny Ms. Thomas, look at this picture of me from mini clinic,’” Coach Thomas said. “That’s why we do it.”
