Feet squeaking on the gym floor, sweat dripping, charging with the ball toward the hoop, senior Madison Crawford tosses the ball up to score her 2000th career point, achieving a new personal point record. Just a month later, she scored her 2200th point, shattering Legacy’s previous point record set by Savannah Catalon in 2023. She hears the roar of the crowd and smiles.
“I thought about all of the hard practices,” Crawford said, “It felt really great. I felt so accomplished at that moment.”
Crawford lingered around basketball all her life. Starting in her earlier years, it was a huge part of her family. Watching from the stands, inspired to see what it felt like on the court, she decided to start playing.
“I was always at basketball games since my dad was a coach and both of my brothers played,” Crawford said. “I was inspired to start playing because of them.”
After learning and playing the game, basketball appeared to mean so much more to her than just being a game.
“For me, basketball means freedom and support,” Crawford said. “It’s such a gift to be able to go out there and show and perform my talents.”
When Crawford started high school ball, she found herself filled with nerves and excitement. She has since learned to use that to her advantage to see what she can achieve.
“Freshman year, being so nervous, and then coming out and achieving this thing,” Crawford said, “it shows me that I can do bigger and better things.”
While she scored all of the points, Crawford recognizes her coaches and teammates as her biggest support system throughout the last four years.
“They push and motivate me to keep doing what I’m doing,” Crawford said. “I try to do the same for them.”
Her talents stem from all of the hard work she has put into this sport. Not just on the court, but also off of it. Her work ethic sets her apart from the rest.
“Maddie is just a relentless worker,” Varsity Assistant Coach Jeremy Lyday said. “She’s always got that drive.”
Crawford puts persistent work toward the sport and treats improvement like a responsibility. She commits to refining every aspect of her game to better herself.
“She sets a goal for herself and will continue to work for it until she achieves it,” Coach Lyday said.
After high school, Crawford plans on continuing her career at the College of Charleston in South Carolina.
“Achieving this thing means I can do so much more at the collegiate level,” Crawford said.
Her accomplishments show her that her future holds immense possibilities. She uses these accomplishments as motivators to continue bettering herself.
“It shows me my potential,” Crawford said, “It means that I have a supportive environment. My teammates, family and coaches, have all allowed me to access my abilities.”
