Ceramics students across Mansfield ISD created bowls to sell at the Empty Bowls event on Nov. 18 from 5:30-9 p.m. Proceeds from this event will support Mansfield Cares in their efforts to feed the hungry. Art teacher Shane Skinner and his ceramics students participated in the bowl-making.
“The primary goal is to raise money for Mansfield Cares,” Mr. Skinner said. “This charity gives money to local causes, including food banks and pantries, shoes for school children, Angel Tree, Feed the Kids summer program, as well as college scholarships.”
Empty Bowls hosts events globally to raise money for various community programs with the primary focus on food-related charities. Mansfield started hosting Empty Bowls 10 years ago, and the community hopes to turn it into a more consistent event.
“There are a lot of individuals involved, including Mansfield Cares and the ceramics community of Mansfield ISD – teachers and students,” Mr. Skinner said. “We are hoping to expand in the future to make an even bigger impact.”
Senior Isabella Robles created a bowl for the event with her third-period Ceramics II class. Each student made a bowl unique to them with varying techniques and colors.
“I feel like the class has come together for this event because we’re all learning the meaning and purpose behind it, and we can all contribute something so small together to help people,” Robles said.
While this is not the first Empty Bowls event in Mansfield, it is the first one at the Grand View Event Venue off Heritage Parkway, and Mr. Skinner is hopeful that the location change will provide more opportunities for the event to grow.
“There are tickets available to purchase if you want to eat some good soup, but you can also just show up and buy a bowl or two or three,” Mr. Skinner said. “Please help us help others.”
