Paddles smacking, laughs flying in the air and students cheering. National Honor Society will host their annual pickleball event at the Legacy tennis courts Nov. 6, from 4-7 p.m.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun for everyone who shows up,” NHS Sponsor Alexandra Kim said. “I don’t see any reason why students shouldn’t go and have the experience.”
To attend and spectate the pickleball matches, you must buy a $2 ticket. If you’d like to participate with a partner and play, you have to purchase a $10 ticket. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to Seed2Harvest, an organization founded by Legacy Alumni Praisy Geevarghese, with hopes of empowering students on their educational journey.
“It’s a great event for students to attend because it’s for a great cause,” NHS President Anay Bhakta,12, said. “It’s not very often to find a community service-oriented event that is as good a time as playing pickleball.”
NHS officers began planning and working on this in early September, marketing via social media and physical flyers, with goals to build the community among NHS members and Legacy students.
“It’s definitely been a task to get all the little things worked out and flowing,” Service Coordinator Emmie Powell, 12, said. “It’s all been worth it, though. We are all so grateful that we get to give back to our community in an enjoyable way.”
The concession stands by the courts will be open and have food and drinks available for sale. All proceeds from concessions will go directly to the senior class to help pay for prom expenses and other senior activities.
“Another one of our goals is to build community within our student body,” Bhakta said. “It’s an experience that can and hopefully will bring students closer and create bonds within our school.”
Last year was the first year NHS hosted this event. They had about 40 total teams participating and even more students spectating. The officers hope to smash those numbers this year.
“To anyone who is on the fence about going, I fully recommend that you go,” Ms. Kim said. “You will be helping our senior class cover expenses, you will be serving your community and most importantly, it will be a very fun experience.”
