The lights spun with green and red colors while seniors Bailey Griffin and Clara Griepp performed a tap dance during rehearsal. Playing Frog and Toad, the girls went through the number many times in order to perfect every step for the performance.
In the PAC, the theater production class will put on ‘A Year with Frog and Toad.’ The show will start at 6 pm on May 11th and 12th and 2 pm on the 13th. This show, based off the series by Arnold Lobel, follows most of the same storyline. This show combines several of the scenes from the book in order to follow Frog, Toad and their animal friends throughout their year, highlighting different event in each one.
“People should come see the show because it’s honestly so fun,” Griffin said. “I’ve known the show for about two years now and it really surprised me how much I liked it. The songs are funny, entertaining and sweet.”
For this show, Mr. Ferman built a ten foot puppet to use as different characters that glow under a blacklight. Along with the puppet, the show will feature other special props such as a disco ball, turning houses and giant cookies.
“I have a vague memory of the book, I remember it, but I don’t remember loving the book and it being a big part of my childhood,” Griepp said. “Then I saw a picture and remembered a scene where Frog and Toad have cookies and they try not to eat them. It is actually a song in the show, it’s called ‘cookies.’”
Different from other shows put on by Legacy, this show is choreographed almost completely by students. Hope Jimenez along with Bailey Griffin choreographed most of the show with a little bit of help from Ms. Heather Alverson.
“We knew kids like the show and we thought it was a good show to do in you know children’s theater,” Griepp said. “It’s been around in the theater and we’ve been wanting to do it for a while and now we finally can.”
Before knowing what show the class would do, Mr. Jeremy Ferman took his daughter to see the show and she loved it, prompting Ferman to look into doing it in the children’s theater class. Also, for a couple years the tech theater classes had looked at the show, giving the program another reason the show.
“It’s in a class which is different because usually when we do a musical at Legacy it is a main stage show we have after school rehearsal and things. But this time we are just doing it in class and we just get to work with the people in the class and we all get to figure it out together.”
